Appointments at the Roxton practice


With an average of 350 appointments not attended each month please help us to help you have better access to your GP by cancelling any appointments you no longer require.

The demand for GP appointments in England is growing at a significant rate, whilst the country is also seeing a shortage of GPs to fill this need.

The Roxton practice, as all other practices across the country, is battling to deal with this.  We constantly monitor our appointment system and have been very fortunate to secure four new GPs in 2015/2016 but this still does not meet the growing demand.

This means we have to change the way we handle requests for appointments.

The receptionists have been instructed by the GPs to ask you the nature of your problem (You can be assured staff observe strict confidentiality at all times).  This information will help in deciding how your appointment request will be dealt with.  You may be referred to your local/our pharmacist, offered a call back from a clinician or booked into an appointment slot with a minor illness nurse or GP.

Multiple problems – we offer 10 minute appointments, please inform reception if you have more than one problem to discuss as we may be able to offer you more than 10 minutes.  At busy times this may not be possible and you may be asked to prioritise your needs.

We are a GP training practice which means we sometimes have medical students accompanying our GPs during their consultations.

Routine Appointments

We operate a pre bookable appointment system.  Patients are able to book a face to face appointment with a GP or a member of the nursing team up to four weeks in advance.

We will always try and book you in to a slot with the GP of your choice but this may not always be possible when demand is very high.

Telephone appointments

If you feel your problem can be dealt with without seeing a GP in person you are able to book a telephone appointment.

Urgent Medical Problems

If you feel your problem is of an urgent medical nature we have a dedicated ‘Urgent Care’ team available each morning.  To take advantage of this service please telephone the surgery as this a not a walk in service.  You will be asked the nature of your problem and to confirm your contact details by the receptionist.  An experienced nurse practitioner or GP will then return your call and you may be asked to attend the surgery for a face to face appointment with an appropriate clinician.

Minor Injury Unit

Our community is very lucky to have the minor injuries unit operating from within the Roxton practice building.
The unit is able to deal with injuries and chest pain and is linked to the A&E department of the Diana Princess of Wales hospital, Grimsby.
